Saddle Pattern Shar-Pei Example

The breed standard lists an acceptable coat color called sable, where black (or second distinct color) overlaces a more commonly found color such as cream, fawn, or red. Some Pei coats may vary in saddle patterns similar to German Shepherds, or tan pointed markings found in such breeds as Black and Tan Coonhounds, Rottweilers, or Dobermans. This is a picture of Shar-pei mix female from Texas named Digit. She had been rescued as a pup after she had been hit by a car and as result, lost a few of her toes. She has since been adopted, but clearly shows the sable / saddle pattern that Shar-pei can sometimes have.
Saddle patterned / tan pointed purebreds must otherwise follow the breed standard. Without a pedigree to verify, many rescued patterned Pei can be easily misidentified as Pei mixed with a variety of shepherds and/or collie type breeds.
