APPLICATION PROCESS FOR ADOPTING SHAR-PEI

ARE YOU READY TO ADOPT?? Long term, stable, loving, companion relationships are expected with all adoptions, whether from rescue groups, shelters, or private owners. Applicants and adopters have the rights to all known history disclosure and the option to reject unsuitable matches. Applications from known collectors and sporting agents will not be accepted. All dogs over 6 months old are spayed / neutered prior to adoption; any rehomed puppies as soon as they are old enough. Choosing an appropriate new home is both the moral and legal obligation of the current owner / acting rescue agent. Most homes will be required to keep their pet indoors the majority of the day, with a secured fenced yard or dedicated leash walker for the safest precautions.

HEALTH/TEMPERAMENT EXPECTATIONS: Many rescue situations involving such life threatening conditions will create emotional and physical challenges for all included, the dog, the foster family, and the prospective home. We do our best to educate and prepare all owners for permanent adoption selections, and encourage your patience and cooperation through this exciting yet often stressful transition. Personal perspective and tolerance levels have been known to influence future outlook on a dog's potential. There's definitely no black and white decision guidelines to determine adoptability and/or compatibility with your family. What one person believes is a good dog, another may not. This is a very adult decision that should not be influenced by pleading rescuer or begging children for the dog's sake. We generally discourage the public adoption of terminal or sickly dogs that have not been properly treated for expensive issues such as entropion, heartworms, bone deformities, skin disease, or serious allergies, unless the new owner is fully aware of the potential consequences and financial drain of such ventures. The remaining health issues will vary according to genetics / evaluator knowledge and the adopter/foster home expectations and past experiences with the breed. Temperament evaluations are the private liability of both the rescuer and adopter. While some dogs may become better managed with obedience and behavior modification, nobody can completely change or remove an adult dog's natural tendencies for aggression or submission. Please read our health and temperament pages for further explanation about the breed.

OTHER ADOPTION RESTRICTIONS: Please be aware there are always adoption restrictions and limits to what's available in each local region. Your options will be even more limited if you are looking for (or can only help) a specific color, age, and/or temperament, so it may take longer than expected and/or the willingness to drive a longer distance than you may be ready for, to find exactly the right new pet you always wanted. All adoptable pets have to be spayed / neutered and up to date on vaccinations, but other medical care / training should be expected depending on the point of rehabilitation when the dog is adopted. Dedicated foster homes are needed in all areas; financial expenses willl vary, pending regional group involvement and incoming health of the fostered pet. Finding help for as many adoptable pets as we can is our only goal, but prospective owners must respect all other local adoption requirements and policies regarding suitable home choices for each of their pets. We can do our best to help mediate difficult situations but won't have any say over final adoption proceedings. Please click here for our placement procedure which is basically the same you can expect from any organized rescue group or shelter.

FOSTER HOMES: If you're still thinking about the breed, and/or would like to know more about a particular dog before committing to adoption, we suggest you ask to foster the dog first. Please read our Foster Guide for general information about becoming a foster home.

PLEASE NOTE: some groups may have increased adoption fees to cover boarding, transportation, and excessive medical expenses, especially for long distance adoptions!! Please confirm all adoption fees / financial expectations before making a commitment to adopt any pet.

Please send us an email with specific details of what type of Shar-pei you are looking to adopt. We also have detailed printable or PDF applications available to send back via email / mail. We look forward to helping you find your new family member!! Thank you for contacting us!!
