SEVERE WEATHER ALERT - tips for saving your pet

SHELTER: Acquire a pet carrier or cage for EACH dog or cat. Exceptions can be made to house more than one animal per carrier but DO NOT mix different animal species together! Frightened animals may exhibit behavior changes. A carrier should permit a dog or cat to stand up and turn around in it.

Help your pet adjust to a carrier as part of routine training to reduce the stress of being confined. Place additional ID on carrier. Survey your home to determine the safest location away from windows. Cover large openings of carrier/cage to protect from flying debris. Provide high areas should flooding occur.

Public shelters do not allow animals except visually and hearing impaired guide dogs.

Available space outside your home, in kennels, animal shelters or hospitals, is VERY LIMITED. Know your options in advance. Consider the difficulties of providing a healthy environment without electricity, running water, and limited supplies or personnel!

PLANTS: Use caution when bringing ornamental plants inside. They may be poisonous to your pets.
FOOD AND MEDICATION: Protect food and medications in water tight containers, preferably in one or more cool, dry, dark places.

If you decide to leave a supply of food out for your pet, leave only dry types of foods that are relatively unpalatable to prevent over eating. Do not leave treat type vitamin-mineral supplements; overeating could cause salt poisoning.

Store adequate water for pets. If you are uncertain how much, consider measuring the amount your pet consumes during an unstressed day and double this.

Water supplies may become contaminated. To purify, add 2 drops chlorine bleach per quart of water, mix, seal tightly, and let stand for 30 minutes before drinking.

Stray animals and pets will be attracted to poorly discarded food. This could result in the spread of disease or poisoning.
PET EMERGENCY CONNECTIONS: Here are some national organizations that assist during and after natural disasters.

ASPCA Disaster Preparedness - Emergencies come in many forms, and they may require anything from a brief absence from your home to permanent evacuation. Each type of disaster requires different measures to keep your pets safe.

UAN Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) - Support or volunteer for your local Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) program.
