USA Shar-pei Rescue Network
working together to ensure no adoptable dogs are left behind...
our network mission of hope and acceptance.

My name is Tina Wissen and I am the owner of this rescue support network. We have had show, pet, and rescued Shar-pei, and have been owned by the breed since 1991. We are all dedicated to improving owner knowledge and animal welfare. My husband is a career Naval officer and we have survived 9 family transfers, several with more than one dog and cat. We encourage all military members to take their ownership responsibilities seriously when considering a new family pet. Our main mission for this site is rescue prevention. All species of pets depend on their owners for survival; they should not be considered temporary or disposable - whether you move, have a baby, or whatever crisis you may eventually have, sincere responsibility and commitment are very necessary to make it through any stressful occasions that change your lifestyle or perspective. We are here to support you to manage your pet's care and training during these difficult times, or at last resort, to teach you how to find a new good home for your pet on your own. Please read below for details on our support services.

As most rescue coordinators will tell you, group services are not designed for a "quick fix" to getting rid of your unwanted pet; they are not readily available to anyone looking to dump their problems on someone else. There's already too many urgent situations in kill shelters, where the animals have already been abandoned by less responsible owners, that most groups have to focus on. As we acknowledged in our mission statement, no group can ever save them all anymore, so it's an unfortunate fact when I say many owners / shelters who contact rescue will be turned down, for lack of volunteers or other miscellaneous excuses. Our site offers a practical solution to this overwhelming issue, and provides a two fold assistance program to 1) offer rehoming promotions for privately owned and public shelter animals, and 2) educate / provide counsel to resolve issues for owners with problem dogs to potentially save their current home. It's also vital to understand what to expect from any group, in addition to understanding the difficult decisions and consequences of their policies.

CURRENT OWNERS: If you are already an owner and are having problems with the health or training of your Shar-pei, please let me first start by saying "you're not alone". This breed involves many unique challenges not all pet owners are familiar with to begin with, in addition to a dozen probable genetic issues that can develop quickly if not bred and/or maintained properly. Owning a Shar-pei takes more hands involvement than you may have experienced with other breeds, but to succeed in your goals of a happy, well-adjusted family pet, you need to express yourself and better learn to communicate with the natural signs and language of canines that they can understand. Please visit our owner education sections on Health and Training for more info.

OWNER SURRENDERS: We sincerely appreciate and empathize whatever situation has prompted you to have to give up your beloved pet, but we also have to ask for your cooperation and patience as well. It didn't take a day to create the problem you can't handle, so you can't expect it to go away or be resolved any sooner. We will do everything we can to directly provide you the support and information necessary to successfully rehome your dog on your own. In addition to relieving rescue services, our promotion services will also empower a more practical and ethical sense of owner responsibility and better ensure your loyal friend's future welfare and longevity. Please visit our listing submission and private placement pages for more information on rehoming your pet.

PROSPECTIVE OWNERS: Do everyone a favor and BE PREPARED!! Learn before you buy, adopt, or accept the responsibility of caring for one of our beloved breed. We encourage you to read everything we offer on this site about our favorite breed. Please also fill out our adoption application which will help us to match the appropriate private, public, or rescue group adoptions in your area. Please also visit all of our listings in your available area to know what type of pets are currently available.

SHELTER VOLUNTEERS: We also provide free liaison services between shelters / volunteers and assist with home leads whenever possible, sharing our submitted adoption applications with PAL-Pei members and other regional groups that are willing to maintain communications. Any other independent group must be contacted at your own expense. Please take the time to learn what each group can and cannot do before contacting them.

No matter how good your intentions, we DO NOT support SPAMMING of multiple groups / volunteers with inapplicable rescue contacts. Most groups do not have foster facilities for dog-aggressive pets, mixed breeds, or may have other restrictions / testing requirements before they can commit to any rescue. Please show proper respect for each volunteer's limitations and capacities. Rescue is hard enough without such conflict.

For your convenience, we have a new online guest form now available. If for some reason you cannot establish contact through our network form (we respond or forward all rescue related questions within 24 hours), please send an email to my network or yahoo account directly to notify me of any immediate issues. Please call our home at 757-638-9326 -- 9am-9pm Eastern time zone -- leave a message if no answer. Please also leave your email so we can save rescue phone expenses or we will refer to the closest network volunteer for assistance.
